With the urbanization and mega cities trend resulting in 70% of the global population expected to be living in cities by 2050, the implementation of smart city technologies will be a critical challenge for governments in both developed and developing regions. Among the many applications and vertical technologies to be deployed, ITS technologies will play a key role in transforming cities into sustainable, efficient, convenient and cooperative places to live.
This study examines a wide range of ITS smart city solutions including eMobilty, multimodal travel, freight, ticketing and payments, traffic management, urban toll, cooperative ITS and V2X, autonomous vehicles, car sharing and on-demand taxis including their internal and external synergies. Examples of projects and trials in a large number of cities are provided.
